Candidates can prepare for certification while also gaining a range of crucial skills that will help them thrive in any work environment. The program contains 17 credit hours and leads to a technical certificate.

Students may also qualify for financial aid if they meet certain requirements. Participants are expected to dedicate 5-9 hours per week to self-study to prepare for class and complete homework.

Accepted applicants will be able to graduate in under 1 year. They will also be able to study online, covering more than 400 hours of curriculum. Afterwards, they will complete 180 hours of externship at the University of Utah hospitals and clinics.

The curriculum covers several key areas of the profession, including pharmaceutical calculations and medical terminology; workplace safety; pharmacology; state and federal regulations; ethics; and more.

It has enjoyed a 96% pass rate in the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board examination. This is significantly higher than the national average pass rate of 70%.

Candidates can expect to develop a range of vital skills. Graduates of this program can work in a wide range of environments, including laboratories, retail outlets, short-term care facilities, hospitals, clinics, and more.

Students learn about common medications, dosage calculations, prescription processing, aseptic techniques, and insurance considerations. They also develop skills in preparing sterile and non-sterile compound medications.

For hands-on training, participants work with Pioneer Rx prescription software. Mountainland Technical College's pharmacy technician program has a 73% completion rate and an 88% job placement rate.

Students also complete a minimum of 160 hours of experiential training through an externship. Utah State University's pharmacy technician program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
