Applicants should be prepared to undergo criminal background checks, as those with criminal convictions may be prevented from participating in clinical education experiences.

Successful graduates will earn a diploma. They will also participate in 320 hours of work experience in local dental facilities.

They will be able to practice in a state-of-the-art school clinic that features patient chairs, patient record software, and digital X-ray systems.

For flexibility, the school allows participants to select a one-year diploma program before taking complementary courses to earn an associate degree.

The program also provides hands-on experience in chairside assisting at the Iowa Central Dental Hygiene Clinic, complete with a clinical externship.

Students must complete 35 credits of instruction. During this time, they will develop expertise in dental terminology, procedures, infection control, equipment and materials, and computerized charting, among other things.

This program utilizes modern equipment to give candidates an immersive learning experience in the school's laboratory. However, candidates can also build upon this by working in dental establishments and private dental offices.

The curriculum includes courses in anatomy and physiology, dental radiography, dental assisting principles, dental specialties, and a psychology elective.
